ovarian cancer awareness

On June 2, 2007, the sisters of Sigma Alpha Omega® adopted Ovarian Cancer Awareness as its national philanthropy.  The sorority is currently working with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance.  The purpose of OCNA is “to conquer ovarian cancer by uniting individuals and organizations in a national movement."  We are very excited about this opportunity and are looking forward to raising awareness and funds to support this organization. We place a special emphasis on our philanthropy in September for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

During September, our chapter hosts several events to raise awareness and funds for OCNA.  In the past we have hosted an Ovarian Cancer Panel with Cathy Novinger and Cherrie Nettles from the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of South Carolina. We have held a Balloon Pop on campus to benefit OCNA. Teal balloons were filled with various gift cards and students passing by would try to pop the balloons for the prizes. We also gave out facts about Ovarian Cancer attached to water bottles so that students can be aware of the symptoms. In the Fall of 2015, we raised money for OCNA by selling teal Sigma Alpha Omega® t-shirts.
